St. Augustine Convent, Kumily was the congregation’s first convent in India blessed on 03. 12. 1967. The decision to open Congregation’s mission to India and thus extend its roots to another country was made in the General chapter during the term of Mutter M. Larga. It was God’s providence that the Archbishop of Chaganacherry, Mar Mathew Kavukattu came to our hospital for treatment through Rev. Fr. Thomas Asariparambil who was pursuing his doctoral studies in Germany. The Archbishop entrusted Rev. Fr. Sebastian Njaliyath, the procurator of the diocese, to buy the land for the congregation.

The pioneers of the Indian mission were: Sr. Barbara, Sr. Sigmunda, Sr. Domitilla (German sisters) arrived India on 19th April, 1967 and two Indian sisters: Sr. M. Rudolfa Pulickal and Sr. M. Lucida Thadathanayil who joined them on 19th November 1967. The German sisters went back between the months of October and December in 1968.

As the German sisters went back Sr. Pricilla and Sr. Mary from the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross helped the young sisters to run the house at Kumily. The Medical Mission Sisters took the responsibility to run the hospital for 3 years (May 1969- 72 October) as the sisters went to study Nursing and midwifery in St. Marthas, Bangalore. Kuttappanparambu was bought in 1969.

It was in 1985 on a Good Friday, our parishners cut a road across our land destroying trees and cultivation. This road could not be approved since it was separating the convent land into two sections on both side of the road. The congregation finally settled the matter by giving a 6 feet road till the end of its boundary to Kurishumala.

3. Sendhwa mission

In 1971, Rev. Francis Simons the Late Bishop of Indore, from Netherland contacted Cardinal Höffner of Köln for sisters of his diocese to start a mission at Sendhwa, M.P. The cardinal contacted Mutter Cleta Höschen, the superior General of the congregation. He spoke to her about the proposal since he knew that our congregation had become a missionary congregation with a new mission started in Kumily, Kerala, India. She was happy about the proposal and expressed her willingness to accept the offer. She contacted Fr. Henry Wichelmann SVD who was spending his holidays in Germany with the help of Bp. Simons. She sent four Indian sisters: Sr. Celine, Sr. Prema, Sr. Emily and Sr. Agnella (left the congregation) with him to India by ship to start the new mission at Sendhwa on 14th January 1972.
As the sisters came out from the Ship they were welcomed by Fr. Hagenmeier SVD, Fr. Molony SVD, Sr. Kaethy (a lay missionary of Switzerland), Sr. Gema from Dhani (a sister of the congregation of the Poor handmaid) and Fr. Abraham Viruthakulangara who was the Assistant Parish Priest of Sendhwa.
